After a tough couple of years, the Echuca Twin Rivers Specialist School are over the moon about taking their students on excursions again.

As a successful recipient of a 2021 are-able Foundation Community Grant, Echuca Twin Rivers Specialist School were able to purchase 17 booster seats for the Prep-Grade 2 students.

Echuca Twin Rivers Specialist School is a specialist educational setting for children aged 5 to 18 with disabilities. The school’s vision is “To provide inclusive and engaging learning that empowers all students for life”. Providing a practical curriculum based on individual student needs and abilities, the school currently has 113 students from different social and cultural backgrounds.

For the Prep-2 students, these car seats will allow them to have experiences out of the school environment, such as excursions, travelling to the local library and other community locations.

Prior to receiving the grant, the Prep-2 students could only travel on a large bus that seated 20. Due to the school only four staff members, there was rarely a licensed driver available.

“This is incredible news for the students, who have not experienced leaving the school over the last three years,” said Jenni Candy, Administration Officer at Echuca Twin Rivers Specialist School.

For some students, they are finally able to have experiences and visit places that may not have been able to before.

Jenni explained that excursion and extra curriculum activities are crucial in developing students’ confidence and social skills.

The are-able Foundation is so proud to be supporting such wonderful organisations, like the Echuca Twin Rivers Specialist School. It is very special to witness such incredible outcomes for people in our communities.

If your not-for-profit organisation, sporting club or community group promotes and creates a more inclusive and thriving community, you are encouraged to apply for a grant of up to $5,000.

Applications close on April 1st, 2022. To learn more or apply, visit https://areable.org.au/foundation
