A Certificate IV in Disability Inspires a New Career in Portland

Portland local, Emily Down, is thriving in her new position as a Disability Support Worker after completing her Certificate IV in Disability with are-able Education and Training.

In 2022, Emily approached are-able Education and Training Portland to undertake her Certificate IV in Disability. With experience in the ageing care sector, Emily looked at upskilling her knowledge in the disability field to work for people with disability and ageing support needs.

“(Emily) has gained some excellent skills knowledge and attitude for working in this field. Emily was a pleasure to teach and embraced her learning in a professional and dedicated manner,” says Suzanne (Trainer & Assessor).

When asked about her experience with are-able Education and Training, Emily expresses that she “always felt so supported and encouraged to reach my full potential,” and that, “being able to have real life experience when learning helped to bring the bookwork, we were learning into real life examples.”

The course reflects the role of workers in a range of community settings and clients’ homes, who provide training and support in a manner that empowers people with disabilities. Emily has been commended by her trainer, Suzanne, for being an “enthusiastic learner and worker” with the “capacity to bring some great ideas to the industry and follow them through.”

Emily has now achieved her goal and has since acquired employment as a Disability Support Worker at Kyeema Support Services. “The course also provided me with more confidence in my ability to work in the disability field and make a positive change,” she states. Emily currently works in a range of settings including facility based, respite care and in home care. She is diverse in her delivery of care and displays an excellent attention to detail and engagement with her participants. Emily says that “with the support from Suzanne, it helped build up my determination to make a difference in the field and become an advocate for change.”

Congratulations Emily on your new role, and best of luck with your future endeavours.
