Despite facing the challenges of joining are-able at the start of the pandemic in February 2020, Simon was unwavering in his quest to find a role that would bring him a sense of purpose and allow him to connect with others.

Guided by the unwavering support of Team Leader (TL) Jenny Brown, Simon overcame the obstacles presented by the pandemic and secured a position that perfectly suited his needs. Simon’s perseverance and Jenny’s guidance led him to the ideal employer and work environment that aligned with his unique aspirations.

As a participant in are-able’s esteemed Disability Employment Services (DES) program, Simon thrives on social interactions and enjoys engaging with others. It was essential for him to find a role that involved repetitive tasks and provided opportunities for gradual skill development. Collaborating closely with Simon and his NDIS carer, Jenny identified a fitting position at Red Rooster Mount Gambier that offered the necessary support for Simon’s success.

A specialised role was created for Simon at Red Rooster, where he contributes by setting up and cleaning the restaurant four days a week for two hours each day. This opportunity proved to be a perfect fit for Simon, who quickly adapted and blossomed into an independent worker. He has made a significant impact in supporting the restaurant staff and has even acquired the skills to assemble meal boxes.

Simon’s journey to employment stands as a testament to his resilience and unwavering determination to achieve his goals. With the steadfast support of are-able, Simon discovered a job that provides him with a sense of purpose and fulfillment. He now works eight hours a week over four mornings, relishing the opportunity to step out of his house and engage with his role.

Reflecting on his experience at Red Rooster, Simon shared, “I feel more confident in my role, and I enjoy talking to the regular staff.”
